Kate Mary
"By combining memories of architectural detail with botanical elements, the artist seeks to create vibrant versions of the world we live in."
Kate Mary is a Glasgow-based Scottish designer and artist who works primarily with oil pastels and acrylics. She completed her honors degree in Interior Design at Glasgow School of Art and graduated in 2019.
Her main source of motivation in her work as an artist are interiors and architecture. The Scottish artist is guided by every place or space she sees, whether traveling or in more everyday moments. All these elements find their way into her paintings. Kate sees her paintings as a way of re-imagining these experiences.
On a day-to-day basis, the artists who influence her most are David Hockney, Georges Perec, Henri Matisse, Gaston Bachelard and Betty Woodman. Incredible colors and incredible writing are the two things that most influence her work.
Her paintings are detailed, idealized representations of places; collaged together to form immersive and calming visions of escapism. They are influenced by memories of local far-flung journeys she makes, and the architecture, light and pattern within them. Kate’s work explores and responds to our built environment, capturing moments of intrigue in order to create intimate and otherworldly scenes. The pieces submitted are inspired by the French Riviera.
