A book to discover and understand the material for artists.

Did you know that many works of art have been painted with crushed mummy pieces, or that some inks are made from insect secretions? Do you know what the two-letter codes followed by a number on the back of the paint tubes correspond to? The material for artists is a universe which can seem complex but which is fascinating. Yves-Marie Salanson, artistic director of Sennelier devotes a book to it: Choosing the right material for painting and drawing (Editions Eyrolles)

The material that artists use to create their works are the fruit of fascinating traditional and historical skills. This guide, largely illustrated with examples of achievements and manufacturing images, is an initiatory journey into the world of fine arts. It has three objectives: Discover, understand, and get started.

The material that artists use to create their works are the fruit of fascinating traditional and historical skills. This guide, largely illustrated with examples of achievements and manufacturing images, is an initiatory journey into the world of fine arts. It has three objectives: Discover, understand, and get started.

Discover, because the manufacture of colors, papers, pencils, are captivating traditional trades. The author shows the know-how of the people who make the brushes entirely by hand, and that of those who make the charcoals, canvas and papers…

The second objective of the book is to understand because one can feel lost in the techniques and the diversity of products offered in fine art stores. The reader will find in the book the keys to explain the difference between these techniques, and all the information to decode the material. By reading it, he will understand, for example, information on binders, opacity, pigmentation, series, lightfastness, for colors, or information on grammage, composition, for papers.

And then the 3rd objective is to get started! Because anyone can paint. It is extremely satisfying to paint. And with the technical decryption the author offers, the advice he gives and the examples of painting by international artists he shows, the book makes it easier to discover painting.

With this book, seasoned artists will look at their material through the eyes of an expert. Amateur will have the keys to understanding and choosing their material in the shops, and the curious will discover unsuspected manufacturing processes and lots of anecdotes on the history of colors and pigments.
